The Master of Science in Environmental Science and Policy, a collaborative initiative between the College of Science and the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs within the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, offers interdisciplinary education and environmental problem-solving skills to aspiring professionals. This program adopts a holistic approach, blending expertise in environmental sciences—such as conservation biology, climate studies, fisheries science, ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity, and restoration ecology—with insights from social sciences like policy, economics, sociology, political science, and development, as well as humanities disciplines including environmental history, philosophy, and ethics. Its objective is to prepare professionals with comprehensive knowledge and competencies at the nexus of environmental science and policy. Students learn to critically analyze the root causes of environmental challenges and grasp the interconnected dynamics between human and natural systems, along with the links between societal and technological advancements. The curriculum examines actionable strategies and viable solutions for policymakers to consider in discussions on advancing environmental sustainability.
To earn the Master of Science in Environmental Science and Policy, students must complete 36 credits. The program spans three semesters, featuring nine core courses, two mandatory seminars, two skills-based classes, and two department-specific electives. Additionally, participants can select three interdisciplinary courses from any college at Northeastern, allowing them to broaden their perspectives and integrate environmental science and policy principles into diverse fields and professional trajectories.
