Northeastern University's PhD program in Civil and Environmental Engineering offers adaptable study options across all civil and environmental engineering disciplines, including interdisciplinary opportunities within or beyond the department. The next few decades will mark a pivotal era as climate shifts, urban expansion, and technological advancements dramatically transform our living and working environments. Northeastern's emphasis on urban engineering equips students to tackle these evolving challenges through research and training in sustainable resource management, infrastructure resilience, and environmental health.
The doctoral program consists of two key elements: (1) A rigorous curriculum of advanced courses offering specialized knowledge in a chosen civil and environmental engineering focus (the major concentration) along with supplementary coursework in complementary disciplines, and (2) The dissertation, an intensive independent research project addressing a significant technical challenge that makes novel contributions to the field.
PhD and MS/PhD candidates may qualify for departmental Graduate Fellowships
Students can pair the MS in Civil Engineering or MS in Environmental Engineering with a Gordon Engineering Leadership Certificate
The Civil and Environmental Engineering PhD program also offers combination options with the Gordon Engineering Leadership certificate
