Industrial engineering focuses on creating and evaluating systems that integrate people, machinery, and resources, along with their interactions and effectiveness in work environments. Industrial engineers gather relevant data, assess different options, and make decisions that effectively support organizational objectives. The industrial engineering curriculum provides students with a foundation in classic engineering subjects like work design, human-machine interaction, probability, statistics, and engineering economics, while also highlighting modern fields such as simulation modeling, engineering database systems, quality control, logistics and supply chain management, operations research, and facility design. Students apply the knowledge gained from these courses in a comprehensive two-semester capstone design project.
Industrial engineers are employed in manufacturing companies, healthcare facilities, financial institutions, public utilities, transportation, government bodies, insurance providers, and construction companies. Their projects may include designing and implementing computer-integrated supply chains or production systems; planning facilities for various sectors; creating robotic systems for manufacturing settings; contributing to long-term corporate strategy; developing and deploying quality management systems; using simulation to enhance processes and guide operational choices; designing healthcare workflows to improve patient safety; and boosting efficiency, productivity, and creating computer systems for information management.
Over 90% of undergraduate students in the department participate in the cooperative education program. Co-op positions typically offer increasing responsibility as students build theoretical and technical expertise through their coursework. A sophomore might start as a computer data analyst assessing manufacturing system performance and advance to designing engineering workstations by their final year.
