Northeastern University's Bachelor of Arts in Music program immerses students in exploring music's mechanics and its diverse cultural contexts. The program begins with a distinctive introductory course called Music in Everyday Life (MUSC 1001), which examines various aspects of musical experience and music's role in society.
The curriculum exposes students to numerous musical styles, theoretical perspectives, and research methods. While some students choose music as their sole major, many combine it with another field of study. This dual-major path particularly appeals to students pursuing careers in engineering, sciences, business, or humanities while maintaining their musical passions. BA candidates take courses in music history, theory, and ethnomusicology, with opportunities to perform in ensembles or take private lessons. The program also emphasizes experiential learning through various co-op opportunities tailored to individual interests.
The Music Department provides interdisciplinary education in music study and practice, enhanced by hands-on learning experiences and innovative technology. Faculty focus on three interconnected areas: musical creation, production and distribution, and the examination of music's historical significance and cultural influence across different eras and societies.
