This combined major equips undergraduates with knowledge of the scientific, cultural, and political dimensions of global environmental challenges, grounded in historical context. Because of curriculum overlaps, environmental studies majors or combined majors cannot pursue a minor in environmental and sustainability sciences. The Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Sustainability Science program prepares students to analyze environmental issues scientifically and develop interdisciplinary solutions. The curriculum begins with core courses in Earth science, ecology, and sustainability, followed by specialization through one of four tracks. Those drawn to studying how physical and geochemical processes contribute to environmental risks may select the Earth, Oceans, and Environmental Change concentration. For students focused on ecological and evolutionary principles in ecosystem conservation and management, the Conservation, Restoration, and Management track is available. The Sustainable Planning and Development concentration suits students examining science-based approaches to sustainable food, water, and energy systems. Finally, the Environment and Society concentration enables students to apply scientific knowledge to vulnerable human-natural systems facing environmental transformations.
