The Departments of English and Sociology & Anthropology provide an interdisciplinary joint major in English and cultural anthropology. In this combined program, Northeastern students blend literary, linguistic, and writing studies with examinations of human culture and its connections to systems of inequality (such as race, class, and gender) and modern global challenges. Within the English Department, we investigate how literary works and rhetorical practices both influence and are influenced by their cultural contexts. Through literature, language, and rhetoric, we gain valuable insights into the concepts and values that shape our existence, including past and present configurations of aesthetics, identity, social structures, colonialism, health, and ecological concerns across diverse media forms.
