The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry provides graduate programs for both Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Chemistry. New graduate students begin their first year by taking placement exams covering analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, along with biochemistry. These assessments help the graduate progress committee advise students on their initial coursework, allowing for personalized academic plans. M.S. students usually finish required courses within 12-18 months, while Ph.D. candidates typically complete theirs in two years, dedicating remaining time to thesis research. On average, students complete the M.S. program in three years and the Ph.D. in about five years. The M.S. degree mandates 30 graduate credits with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
