North Dakota State University (NDSU) provides a 5-year Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) program, fully accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). This first-professional degree program is primarily located in a stunningly renovated historic industrial building in downtown Fargo, now a vibrant, student-friendly urban area. The majority of graduate architecture students transition directly from NDSU's pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Architecture program. Coursework features nationwide architectural field trips and is enhanced by professional woodworking facilities, digital media labs, and advanced modeling tools like laser cutters and 3D printers. The program balances traditional and digital design methods while offering optional international study opportunities, including summer abroad programs.
For architectural licensure in the U.S., most state boards mandate completion of an accredited professional degree program.
As the only organization authorized to accredit architecture programs at regionally accredited U.S. institutions, NAAB endorses three degree types: Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Architecture, and Doctor of Architecture. Accreditation terms vary from two to eight years based on compliance with educational standards, with NDSU's next review scheduled for 2026.
