The Department of Civil Engineering provides Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs in civil engineering, along with an M.S. in environmental engineering. Additionally, the College of Engineering and Architecture features a Ph.D. program in engineering where civil engineering serves as a potential specialization. The department collaborates in various interdisciplinary initiatives, including Environmental and Conservation Sciences, Materials & Nanotechnology, and Transportation and Logistics. Specializations within the civil engineering M.S. and Ph.D. programs encompass construction, environmental, geotechnical, materials, structural, transportation, and water resources engineering, with flexibility for other related fields. Curriculum and research directions are customized to align with individual goals. Students frequently supplement their primary studies with courses from other disciplines. These programs aim to enhance technical expertise, interdisciplinary awareness, and professional readiness in civil engineering. The Ph.D. requires 90 post-baccalaureate credits (or 60 beyond a relevant M.S.) with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Candidates must establish a dissertation committee and submit a study plan by their first year's end, completing at least 30 additional credits from approved civil engineering or cross-disciplinary courses.
