The Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) represents the highest practical degree in music, tailored for performers and conductors seeking to reach peak artistic proficiency. This program equips graduates with the necessary credentials for collegiate-level music instruction. Vocal performance applicants must demonstrate competency in French, German, and Italian languages, with potential supplementary coursework assigned by the advisory committee. Candidates collaborate with their committee (comprising at least three graduate faculty members: an advisor, an academic studies representative, and one additional member) to design recitals and a culminating written project. The program offers two specializations: Performance and Conducting, both requiring 90 post-baccalaureate credits (93 for Choral Conducting). Applicants holding relevant master's degrees may transfer eligible credits, subject to evaluation by the graduate music faculty.
