Respiratory Care is a specialized healthcare field focused on assessing, treating, and educating patients with heart and lung conditions. Respiratory therapists (RTs) collaborate with medical teams across various settings including intensive care units, emergency departments, neonatal/pediatric units, general wards, and home healthcare. Their wide-ranging duties involve evaluating patients, providing oxygen therapy, clearing airways, conducting diagnostic tests, operating life-support equipment, assisting with recovery programs, and advising doctors on treatment strategies.
This profession involves three key areas: diagnostic procedures, therapeutic interventions, and patient education. Diagnostic work includes collecting and examining biological samples, conducting pulmonary function tests to identify breathing impairments, performing sleep studies, and analyzing results. Treatment involves delivering oxygen and respiratory medications, operating ventilators, maintaining breathing tubes, performing airway clearance techniques, and guiding rehabilitation programs. Educational efforts help patients, families, and communities understand respiratory diseases, treatments, and preventive care. All these critical responsibilities are carried out under proper medical supervision.
