The Department of Modern Languages offers degree programs in French and Spanish, including a teaching certification option, along with German studies. NDSU's comprehensive ESL program operates year-round under Modern Languages. The department also oversees the International Studies Major. For questions or to schedule a campus visit, please reach out to us at (701) 231-7887.
While developing advanced language skills remains our core focus, Modern Languages courses also emphasize historical context, cultural studies, and current global affairs. We recommend that language majors complement their studies with relevant courses in history, anthropology, sociology, political science, international relations, linguistics, and arts to enhance their cross-cultural understanding. The teaching track for French and Spanish majors equips future educators with both academic rigor and practical teaching methodologies. Participation in study abroad programs is mandatory for French and Spanish majors.
