Mechanical engineers work across diverse fields involving thermal dynamics, energy systems, force and motion, and their impacts on various products. They may contribute to designing large-scale industrial equipment, power generation facilities, vehicles and aircraft, robotics, biomedical instruments, precision measurement and data collection systems, nanotechnology, and advanced materials. This breadth allows mechanical engineers significant career versatility.
There has been a consistent need for well-trained mechanical engineers over many years. North Dakota State University's Mechanical Engineering Department provides an education that prepares graduates for success across all professional sectors. Since its establishment, the department has produced around 5,000 mechanical engineering alumni who have pursued careers across the United States and internationally. The Mechanical Engineering Bachelor of Science program holds accreditation from ABET's Engineering Accreditation Commission (http:www.abet.org).
