The Crop and Weed Sciences (CWS) program within the Department of Plant Sciences focuses on cultivating grains and forage crops, weed management, genetics, plant breeding, crop physiology, and biotechnology applications. North Dakota maintains its position as the top producer of hard red spring wheat, durum wheat, barley, flax, dry edible beans, canola, dry peas, lentils, and sunflowers nationwide. Additionally, the state ranks among the top ten producers for various other field crops such as oats, rye, sugar beets, and grass hay, typically holding third place in total harvested crop acreage. Crop sales generate over 50% of North Dakota farmers' annual revenue, while crops used as livestock feed contribute significantly to income from animal sales. This makes North Dakota State University an ideal environment for studying crop and weed sciences.
Science Focus This specialization applies principles of chemistry, botany, mathematics, and physics to CWS. It serves as an outstanding academic path for students planning to pursue advanced degrees in CWS.
