The department provides three undergraduate theatre degree options, all adaptable to align with students' professional aspirations. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in theatre arts combines a liberal arts foundation with coursework in technical theatre, performance, directing, literature, theatre history, and modern languages, requiring second-year foreign language proficiency. For those seeking an alternative, the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree mandates a minor in an approved discipline. The professionally-focused Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) program, specializing in musical theatre, performance, or design technology, emphasizes practical studio work alongside academic rigor and requires an audition for entry. This intensive track expands students' artistic horizons through cross-disciplinary fine arts study and necessitates active participation in Theatre NDSU and LCT Productions, reflecting a strong dedication to the craft. Theatre NDSU serves as a creative laboratory where artistic exploration meets structured training, maintaining exceptional professional standards. Its programming includes: (1) Main Stage Productions - four annual performances spanning modern musicals like Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson and Sweeney Todd to classical works such as The Comedy of Errors, following a four-year stylistic rotation to expose students to diverse Western theatrical traditions, including Devised theatre and Theatre for Young Audiences. (2) The student-run Newfangled Theatre Company presents up to four secondary stage productions annually. Additional opportunities include Studio Theatre Productions featuring B.F.A. showcases, student-directed works, and semesterly dance performances.
