English education covers the four core language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The English education program offers a diverse selection of English and teaching courses, ensuring future educators grasp (a) each language skill, (b) modern theories of adolescent growth, and (c) contemporary teaching methods for secondary education. Students also gain hands-on experience by completing several teaching practicums in nearby schools.
Those pursuing an English education degree learn to teach language arts creatively and effectively to grades 5-12 students. The program includes courses in linguistics, writing, and literary studies. Through British, American, World, and Young Adult literature classes, students examine various works—including fiction, poetry, and essays—by diverse authors. Additionally, teaching courses equip students with strategies for engaging lessons, designing assessments, and adapting instruction to different learning needs.
