The wetland soils initiative examines hydric soils in regulated wetlands along with soils featuring seasonal water tables within one meter of the surface. Our hydric soils investigation explores their formation processes and field identification techniques. For moist soils (not strictly wetlands), we create methods to assess water table positions through soil structure analysis. This involves tracking sites with advanced automated systems, analyzing soil water movement characteristics, and applying hydrological models to predict long-term water level changes. These findings are correlated with soil coloration patterns to enable hydrological estimations based on visual soil characteristics.
