The nutrient management initiative aims to maximize farm yields while safeguarding ecological health. For decades, the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences has specialized in soil enrichment techniques, nutrient regulation practices, and conservation of North Carolina's land and aquatic ecosystems.

Our current nutrient management efforts include:

Creating sustainable fertilization strategies for vineyards, cash crops, and biofuel production.
Measuring nitrogen release rates from organic fertilizers.
Researching chemical processes and cultivation methods in organic farming.
Building and updating digital tools for nutrient planning that address both regional watershed concerns and individual field conditions.
Precision agriculture techniques for soil health monitoring, particularly using satellite imagery and advanced mapping technologies. Additional program specifics are available through the Geographic Information Sciences Program.
