The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences collaborates closely with the NC State Animal Science Department on forage research initiatives. This work involves USDA researchers based at NC State University. Ongoing studies focus on analyzing forage properties that impact nutritional quality, examining nutrient cycles in forage crops fertilized with swine wastewater, and investigating practical grassland ecology approaches. This includes silvopastoral agroforestry systems and grazing-based crop rotations. Additional research explores developing sustainable forage feeding systems for meat goats, utilizing goats for natural weed control in pastures and woodlands, evaluating tree fodder potential in goat agroforestry systems, and optimizing supplemental feeding strategies for forage-reliant goat diets.
