The Doctor of Philosophy in Design program aims to expand design knowledge via rigorous research and academic inquiry. This vision stems from identifying shared foundations across design fields while emphasizing specialized expertise within each discipline. The PhD curriculum embraces diverse research pursuits dedicated to enhancing human well-being. An external evaluation recently noted: NC State University's Design PhD program excels remarkably. It measures up strongly against comparable doctoral programs across North America. The College of Design has established a influential and esteemed research domain (design), with the PhD curriculum leveraging the institution's and faculty's core competencies. Launched in 1999 by NC State's College of Design, the PhD program now hosts over forty international students conducting research that bridges and elevates design disciplines.

Qualification Requirements
Success in a doctoral program, unlike performance in an undergraduate or even the professional master's program, is related directly to the student's ability to pose challenging questions that drive independent research and collaboration with faculty, engagement with issues and contexts for design larger and more complex than those represented by immediate assignments, and the ability to organize thought through writing. The application package should be convincing in demonstrating these attributes. Academic Transcripts (both Undergraduate & Graduate): Minimum GPA of 3.0
Applicants must hold a Master's degree. For International students only: English language proficiency shown through completion of one of the following testing methods:
TOEFL (minimum score of at least 80)
IELTS (overall band score of at least 6.5) Toefl paper-based test requires a score of 550 or higher (with scores of 50 on at least two of the three sections and no section score below 45). GRE scores are not required Letters of recommendation both confirm and support the student's academic record and provide explanations when the record contains inconsistencies or represents an atypical background. Three letters are required. Applicants are required to submit a portfolio and/or research publication for review within the online application. Statement of Purpose (SoP) and Research Interest Area(s)
