This initiative primarily addresses household wastewater and its treatment using both surface and subsurface methods. Key considerations include location selection, system design, operational procedures, and ecological effects. Educational materials about septic systems and soil compatibility have been compiled into informative fact sheets. Details about available courses in North Carolina are accessible through the Outreach training section. Responding to significant demand for practical instruction, the department - collaborating with various university divisions, regulatory bodies, technical support organizations, and industry partners - has established multiple training centers across North Carolina. The Raleigh-based Soil and Water Environmental Technology Center specializes in land-based waste treatment solutions. Additional training sites operate in Plymouth, Boliva, Fletcher, and Greensboro.

To be considered for admission in full graduate standing, applicants must have: a four-year bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from a regionally accredited college or university. Exceptions to standard accreditation may be granted for applicants with international degrees, including applicants with three-year degrees from institutions in Europe participating in the Bologna Process. a GPA of at least 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) in their undergraduate degrees.
