The Weed Science division of the department was established in 1997, coinciding with the institution's 50th anniversary. Initially launched with a single faculty member in 1947, the program expanded in 1953 with additional staffing. That same year, a USDA-ARS plant physiologist joined to investigate herbicide mechanisms.
From its inception, the program distinguished itself through its comprehensive approach—spanning fundamental to practical research—and a steadfast commitment to academic and outreach excellence. Today, the team comprises seven faculty members, seven technicians, and 19 graduate students. Weed Science faculty collaborate closely with researchers from other departments and both private and public organizations, fostering a program that has earned global acclaim. Alumni occupy influential roles in leading industries and academic institutions worldwide, and the program aims to maintain its status as a premier source of skilled Weed Science professionals.
Faculty members are dedicated to an ongoing strategy of enhancing crop protection initiatives to serve North Carolina's population. Their efforts include investigating core scientific concepts and innovative weed control methods, incorporating findings into advanced sustainable management strategies, delivering top-tier education to students and the broader community, advocating for economically viable and ecologically responsible weed control practices, and upholding professional standards within the field.
