Our department's researchers leverage chemistry to push forward disease research, diagnostics, and therapeutic development. Faculty collaborate across NC State and with external partners through interdisciplinary initiatives, exploring disease at the molecular level and creating innovative medical solutions.
A key research priority involves identifying and designing pharmaceuticals to address the growing crisis of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The World Health Organization has identified this escalating issue as among the most critical global health challenges.
The Chemistry Department's flagship graduate program is the Ph.D. in chemistry. Doctoral candidates must complete at least 72 credit hours, reduced to 54 for those entering with a chemistry master's degree. As an ever-evolving discipline, chemistry intersects with numerous fields to address pressing societal needs - from environmental sustainability to healthcare breakthroughs. NC State's Chemistry Department equips students for academic and professional achievement while driving impactful discoveries. Through exceptional instruction and research experiences, we empower students to confront major scientific challenges and thrive in their chosen careers. Our distinguished faculty mentor students through comprehensive, demanding programs at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
