Genetics explores the study of inherited characteristics in living organisms. Researchers in this field examine how genes and environmental influences impact health and disease, the role of gene expression in biological functions and growth, and how genetic mechanisms contribute to diversity within species. Professionals also create innovative methods for handling, interpreting, and visualizing extensive genetic datasets. The bachelor's program offers both theoretical knowledge and hands-on lab training across key genetics specialties. This major equips students for advanced academic pursuits or professional paths in research, healthcare, genetic advising, or biotechnology, serving as an excellent pairing with other life science degrees at NC State. Many alumni pursue advanced degrees in research or enter professional programs in medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science.
