Science, Technology & Society (STS) is an interdisciplinary domain investigating how contemporary science and technology influence modern culture, values, and social structures, and conversely, how societal values guide scientific and technological progress. STS analyzes the origins of science and technology, their integration into society, their evolution through social dynamics, and societal adaptations to these advancements. Numerous instances demonstrate these connections: Biotechnology: Genetic research and engineering enable humanity to manipulate life at its core. Through genetic modifications of plants, animals, and potentially humans, we could permanently transform our interaction with the natural world. Globalization & Economic Competition: Expanding economic rivalry foreshadows a worldwide culture interconnected via computers, satellites, and digital networks. The Internet: The rise and proliferation of computer-based communication represents one of history's most rapidly spreading transformative technologies. This global network may redefine our conceptions of community, individual identity, and worldwide information exchange. Weapons Technology, Terrorism, and Security: The weapons competition persists despite the Soviet Union's dissolution. Nuclear arms, missile systems, chemical and biological weapons, along with increasingly lethal conventional arms, pose distinct and urgent challenges for all humankind.
