In our increasingly interconnected world, individuals are now more closely linked than ever before, facing both opportunities and obstacles on a global scale. Our personal and shared experiences continuously mold this world, just as we are profoundly affected by events occurring in its most distant regions. At NC State University, International Studies (IS) is a multidisciplinary program designed to equip graduates for a world where global connections coexist with divisions. Students select from various concentrations such as Africa, Europe, Latin America, East and Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Middle East, International Economy and Environment, International Relations, and International Cultural Studies. Each concentration offers a diverse range of courses across multiple academic disciplines. All IS majors complete three foundational courses, develop proficiency in a foreign language, and participate in a study abroad experience. Through this curriculum, students gain the skills to navigate cultural differences, global economic forces, and evolving geopolitical landscapes.
To earn a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, students must complete a minimum of 33 semester hours. This includes three core IS courses, a 300-level foreign language class, five concentration-specific courses, and six credit hours of advised electives. Additionally, students must complete at least six credit hours through an approved Study Abroad Program. Those pursuing a double major may apply three internationally-focused courses from their secondary major toward their IS degree. Similarly, one course from a minor may also count toward the International Studies major requirements.
