NYU's Chemistry Department provides a Master's program tailored for students not continuing to a Ph.D. This terminal degree typically requires 3-4 semesters of combined coursework and research. To graduate, students must earn 32 credit points (with a minimum of 24 completed at NYU) while maintaining a 3.0 GPA and no individual course grade below B-. A mandatory 0-credit Professional Development in the Sciences course must be taken during the first semester. Thesis-track students must produce original research, write a dissertation, and pass an oral exam before a faculty committee (including their advisor). The public thesis defense includes a 45-50 minute presentation followed by a private Q&A with the committee. Non-thesis candidates must complete all 32 credits through graduate-level lecture courses, including the required 2-credit CHEM-GA 3010 Graduate Student Seminar, while maintaining a B (3.0) average.
