This dual-certification program in New York State equips you to teach both English and special education for grades 7-12, with an optional extension for grades 5-6. You'll explore teaching theories and methodologies tailored to students with disabilities and diverse learning needs, while developing expertise in English, literacy, and language arts through hands-on classroom experience. During your studies, you'll enhance your professional qualifications by mastering: Instructional strategies for personalizing education for students with learning challenges or disabilities. Techniques for interpreting psychological and educational evaluations of students with special needs. Advocacy skills to support students' educational rights and requirements. This MA program integrates subject-specific coursework with teaching fundamentals, complemented by field experiences and guided student teaching. You'll complete two semesters of teaching practice in NYC schools, working in both special education environments and mainstream English classrooms at middle and high school levels, applying academic knowledge to real-world teaching scenarios. Throughout this process, you'll receive constructive feedback from mentor teachers and NYU professors to continually improve your instructional skills.
