The Master's program in Religious Studies immerses students in key aspects of modern academic religious scholarship. Our curriculum explores themes like religion's intersection with media, secularism and diverse faith traditions, and how religious practices evolve in contemporary society. Graduates often pursue doctoral studies or careers in various sectors such as media, publishing, teaching, and nonprofit organizations.
The program features coursework in two main components: 1) specialized MA seminars offering in-depth instruction in social theory and religious scholarship, and 2) elective seminars chosen with faculty guidance from the broader graduate curriculum. Students complete either an MA thesis or comprehensive exam, developed with faculty advisors, to demonstrate mastery of concepts and methodologies gained during their studies.
Through collaboration with the Carter Journalism Institute, we offer a specialized MA track combining Religious Studies with Journalism. This program prepares aspiring journalists for careers in print, digital, or broadcast media with a focus on religious coverage. Upon earning their degree, students will: demonstrate fluency in post-Enlightenment religious theory, analyze complex texts effectively, participate in scholarly discussions, and conduct academic research and writing. They will also establish a foundation for continued advanced study in their chosen field.
