Our Near Eastern Studies MA program provides specialized tracks in advanced language studies, international affairs, and museum curation, along with a combined MA in Global Journalism and a dual Library Science degree. We maintain strong partnerships with the Middle Eastern Studies Department, which runs an independent doctoral program.

The curriculum emphasizes the modern political economy and cultural dynamics of the region, examining historical developments that influence current realities. Classes explore contemporary history and governance, plus specialized subjects aligned with faculty expertise. Current research focuses include: economic and political entitlements, legal systems and social structures, gender dynamics, Arabic literature, Persian literary traditions, urban anthropology in Arab societies, Ottoman and Arab nation-building, Egyptian societal evolution, and modern Iranian and Central Asian studies. Additional offerings cover classical Islamic civilization, ancient Near Eastern history, and philosophical traditions.
Language acquisition receives particular emphasis, featuring cutting-edge teaching in Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Turkish, Hindi/Urdu, and ancient regional languages. Numerous students participate in intensive summer language immersion programs domestically or internationally.
