NYU's Department of Italian Studies stands among the nation's premier programs for Italian education. It provides both Master of Arts and Ph.D. programs in Italian Studies, featuring instruction from distinguished faculty experts across major domains of Italian literature and cultural history. The department particularly excels in medieval/Renaissance studies, 20th-century literature and film, postmodern Italy, digital humanities, and cultural theory. Alongside regular faculty, the program invites renowned visiting professors from Italy and the U.S., including through the Tiro a Segno fellowship which focuses on Italian-American cultural contributions.
The program draws exceptional graduate students globally while fostering future educators. Students gain teaching experience through Italian language and literature courses typically in their second and third years. The department accommodates qualified part-time master's candidates and encourages interdisciplinary study across history, film, comparative literature, and fine arts.
Unique opportunities include research at NYU's Villa La Pietra in Florence and collaborations with the Università di Firenze. In New York, students access Casa Italiana's vibrant cultural programming - including lectures, films, concerts, and exhibitions. The department also organizes two major conferences: an annual graduate symposium and a biennial U.S.-Italy scholarly collaboration with Florence's SUM institute, bridging historical and literary studies.
