The Master of Science in Human Skeletal Biology equips graduates to utilize Biological Anthropology methods across diverse settings, particularly in Forensic Sciences (such as Medical Examiner's offices, Coroner's offices, Military services, Criminal Justice systems, Police departments, and Mass Disaster response). This program also serves as excellent preparation for students aiming to enter PhD programs focused on skeletal biology, molecular anthropology, and human evolutionary studies.
A key component involves semester-long professional internships tailored to student interests, offering practical experience. These placements span genetics (in university laboratories and Medical Examiner facilities), osteology and dental studies (in campus labs, NYU Dental School, the American Museum of Natural History, and Medical Examiner offices), plus field recovery training (through university programs or external field schools). Many students develop their thesis projects from these internship experiences. Annual skeletal biology symposiums feature guest researchers presenting lectures and conducting workshops.
