New York University School of Law (Law) and Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) provide integrated dual degree options that combine a Juris Doctor (JD) with either a PhD or MA in three disciplines: Economics, Philosophy, or Political Science. These streamlined programs shorten the timeline for earning both degrees. The Law School accepts 12 credits from GSAS courses toward the 83 credits needed for the JD, enabling most dual degree candidates to finish their JD requirements in five terms instead of six. All courses must receive approval from both programs to qualify for the dual degree. Similarly, certain law school classes can fulfill PhD and MA requirements, helping students complete those degrees faster. JD/MA candidates typically earn both degrees in four years (eight semesters) rather than the standard five years if pursued separately. For JD/PhD students, the JD is usually awarded after four years, with PhD completion continuing afterward.
