New York University's School of Law (Law) and Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) provide integrated dual degree options, enabling students to earn a Juris Doctor (JD) alongside either a PhD or MA in three disciplines: Economics, Philosophy, or Politics.
These combined programs shorten the timeline for obtaining both degrees. The Law School accepts 12 credits from GSAS courses toward the 83 credits needed for the JD, often enabling dual degree candidates to finish their JD studies in five semesters instead of six. All courses must receive approval from both programs to qualify for the dual degree. Similarly, certain law school credits apply toward PhD and MA requirements, helping students complete those degrees faster. JD/MA candidates typically receive both degrees after four years (eight semesters), compared to the standard five years if pursued separately. For JD/PhD students, the JD is usually awarded after four years, while PhD requirements continue to be fulfilled.
