The PhD in Developmental Psychology aims to equip you with a thorough understanding of developmental theories and the research expertise needed to push forward scientific knowledge about development within various contexts. This doctoral program focuses on the interplay between biological factors, cultural influences, and environmental contexts in shaping social, cognitive, linguistic, and emotional growth. You'll employ diverse methodologies—including experimental, quasi-experimental, survey-based, observational, and semi-structured interview techniques—to examine how individual and environmental factors impact the development of infants, young children, adolescents, and teens across multiple interconnected levels. The curriculum includes coursework in developmental topics, analytical approaches, research methodologies, and advanced seminars exploring theories of change and cultural frameworks. Throughout your studies, you'll participate in ongoing community-based or laboratory research projects, guided by both primary and secondary faculty advisors. Our research takes place in NYU labs as well as in homes, childcare centers, schools, hospitals, and neighborhoods throughout New York City's vibrant, multicultural communities.
