Progress in computing power and data accessibility, along with innovative analytical techniques, has given rise to a groundbreaking discipline: data science. This emerging field demands a new breed of professionals: data scientists who are thoroughly educated, interdisciplinary, and ethically conscious. Established in Fall 2017, the cutting-edge CDS PhD Data Science program aims to cultivate researchers proficient in this evolving domain while fostering an ideal setting for their academic growth. The program has quickly gained global acclaim, ranking among the most prestigious and competitive doctoral programs in data science worldwide, even earning recognition from the NSF through an NRT training grant. The CDS PhD program molds future data scientists by equipping them to (1) create methodologies and apply statistical approaches to solve complex, interdisciplinary problems, (2) articulate precise inquiries from vast, diverse, and uncertain datasets, (3) bridge theoretical research with practical applications across industries, healthcare, and government, and (4) remain mindful of their work's ethical consequences. Our mission focuses on fostering these next-generation experts by constructing an ecosystem where methodological breakthroughs seamlessly transition into scientific and societal applications. We envision a symbiotic relationship where fundamental data science research enhances discovery processes and informs public policy, while real-world challenges inspire novel methodological developments. Crucially, these approaches integrate ethical considerations from their inception.
