Anthropological Archaeology aims to uncover humanity's past—examining cultural beginnings, societal development, human adaptation, social stratification, farming practices, and city formation—while connecting these historical insights to our modern world. NYU archaeologists carry out excavations across Africa, Asia, and Europe. Additionally, we employ laboratory techniques and experimental studies to analyze behavioral patterns, ancient craftsmanship, and cultural development throughout history. By integrating multiple scientific disciplines, we investigate how human communities have transformed over centuries, emphasizing how geological and environmental factors shape our interpretation of archaeological findings.
Our department emphasizes cross-cultural studies that develop frameworks accommodating humanity's vast diversity. The curriculum provides a comprehensive perspective on human studies, introducing students to anthropology's core branches while offering specialized focus areas within each subfield.
