Spanning the ancient world from the western Mediterranean to East Asia, from the Neolithic era to the early Middle Ages, ISAW cultivates a new wave of scholars whose research transcends traditional academic boundaries. This interdisciplinary approach enhances understanding of ancient civilizations' cultures, arts, languages, religions, economies, and their interconnectedness. Students engage in research seminars, lectures, and specialized readings with ISAW and NYU's distinguished faculty, as well as scholars from other metropolitan institutions. The ISAW Visiting Research Scholar program further enriches this experience by hosting global experts who contribute to graduate seminars and deliver public talks, offering students invaluable learning opportunities.
Those looking to integrate scientific methodologies into their research can leverage ISAW's partnership with the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Department of Scientific Research. This collaboration provides access to introductory material studies courses and hands-on lab experience in the Met's renowned facilities.
Each student's academic path is tailored to their unique interests and strengths, guided by a dedicated faculty committee. This personalized plan is documented in a doctoral contract, adaptable through mutual agreement as the student's research evolves. Comprehensive multi-year fellowships support all students throughout their 12-month academic journey.
