Mechanical engineering creates the physical systems and machinery that shape contemporary civilization — encompassing everything from climate control systems to vehicles, industrial robots to energy facilities, prosthetic devices to moving staircases, and spacecraft propulsion to environmental monitoring satellites. The field provides nearly boundless potential for developing inventions and innovations that can launch business enterprises.
Through practical computer applications and laboratory exercises in our advanced facilities, the School of Engineering's Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) curriculum instructs students in the fundamental principles of the field and their practical implementation. Learners additionally cultivate expertise in specialized domains including structural and fluid dynamics, automated control systems, and robotic mechanisms. The BSME program holds accreditation from ABET's Engineering Accreditation Commission.
Mechanical engineering professionals pursue employment across multiple sectors such as national security, aeronautics, vehicle manufacturing, and communication technologies. The discipline also maintains a historic legacy of pioneering advances in areas including resource preservation, enhanced performance of energy-using equipment, and sustainable power solutions. New prospects are developing in biomedical systems and instrumentation, alongside nanotechnology and integrated mechanical-electronic systems. Students may also leverage their academic foundation as preparation for legal practice, medical careers, business leadership, or advanced academic pursuits.
