This Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education (Grades 7-12) equips future educators to thoughtfully analyze their instructional methods and develop enhanced approaches for teaching mathematics, particularly for historically marginalized youth. The curriculum reflects contemporary advancements in math pedagogy across the country, along with research on urban students' educational obstacles.
Coursework weaves together insights from academic studies, professional teaching associations, and national education initiatives. Program participants explore equity challenges in math instruction while creating inclusive techniques to support all learners in mastering advanced mathematics and overcoming academic hurdles. The program emphasizes fair and effective teaching methodologies for secondary mathematics and adolescent educational growth.
The comprehensive program includes diverse classroom experiences and observations, concluding with two semesters of student teaching in public or private schools. Graduates qualify for New York State teaching certification in grades 7-12, with additional authorization for grades 5-6.
