The Department of Spanish and Portuguese explores languages, cultural developments, and critical perspectives originating from Latin America, the Caribbean, the Iberian Peninsula, and Luso-Afro-Brazilian regions through an interdisciplinary lens. As two of the most influential languages globally, Spanish and Portuguese serve as vital mediums for cultural expression, political discourse, and economic exchange. Historically colonial languages, they now function as key communication tools across the Global South, with Spanish increasingly becoming America's secondary language. Our department employs decolonial methodologies in language and translation studies, offers critical analyses of film, literature, performing arts, music, and visual culture, engages with historical narratives and archival research, and contributes to philosophical and sociopolitical discussions incorporating Black and Indigenous viewpoints from the Global South. We strongly recommend students enhance their studies through immersive programs at NYU Madrid or NYU Buenos Aires, where they can complete degree requirements while gaining local insights. Opportunities also include internship placements and contributions to Esferas, our digital undergraduate publication.
