NYU's sociology program and major explore how personal experiences are shaped by social contexts - from families and communities to institutions and global systems. Sociologists analyze how individual life stories intersect with larger social, political, and economic structures that range from local to worldwide in scope.
Through sociology, we gain insights into society and develop strategies for positive transformation. This field equips students with critical thinking skills to examine contemporary issues and interpret various forms of social evidence. It challenges learners to perceive the world through a new lens, recognizing underlying systems of power, inequality, and social stratification that influence daily existence.
Qualified senior sociology majors can participate in the honors program by completing a thesis during a year-long Honors Seminar. Honors students design independent research projects and produce thesis papers with guidance from faculty leaders and teaching assistants. Additional faculty mentors may provide specialized support throughout the research and writing process.
