The Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (MEIS) explores the rich history and contemporary dynamics of a geographically expansive and culturally varied region spanning from North Africa to Central Asia and from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean. The program employs interdisciplinary and comparative methods to examine Middle Eastern civilizations from ancient times to the modern era, with special emphasis on developments following the rise of Islam.
Pursuing a Middle Eastern Studies degree enables students to achieve proficiency in regional languages such as Arabic, Hindi, Persian, Turkish, and Urdu. Through coursework with faculty experts, students gain comprehensive knowledge across multiple disciplines including history, anthropology, political science, literature, law, religious studies, and linguistics.
Beyond the core curriculum, students are advised to enroll in relevant cross-listed courses from other departments like anthropology, art history, comparative literature, Hebrew and Judaic studies, history, political science, religious studies, and sociology to enhance their academic experience.
