The College of Arts and Science (CAS) and Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) provide an accelerated dual-degree program allowing students to obtain both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in German more efficiently and affordably than traditional pathways.
This B.A./M.A. program in German equips undergraduates for careers demanding advanced German language proficiency, literary expertise, cultural knowledge, or deep engagement with German intellectual heritage. The four-year undergraduate phase incorporates a study abroad semester and culminates in the B.A. degree, during which students enhance their linguistic abilities, cultural competence, and explore seminal German literary works.
The undergraduate curriculum features diverse courses covering the languages, cultures, and literatures of German-speaking regions. Students can pursue a German major, combined majors in German/linguistics or German/global liberal studies, or a German language minor.
Beyond language instruction, the department provides interdisciplinary courses in English examining German cultural studies, history, philosophy, arts, and literature for non-native speakers.
Department initiatives include monthly lunch discussions, tutoring services, the Goethe's Table student club, annual academic awards for excellence in German studies, and programming through NYU's Deutsches Haus cultural center, which hosts film screenings, concerts, lectures, and exhibitions.
