The Department of French Literature, Thought, and Culture invites students at all proficiency levels, from beginners to those with prior French education seeking to enhance their language abilities or explore Francophone literature, culture, and intellectual traditions. Native speakers will find advanced courses tailored to their level. Our curriculum highlights the richness of French-speaking communities worldwide while addressing contemporary issues like gender equality, racial justice, and environmental sustainability. Students can choose from multiple major and minor programs that pair well with disciplines such as art history, comparative literature, economics, history, international relations, journalism, music, and psychology. We particularly recommend studying abroad at NYU Paris, situated in the vibrant Latin Quarter.
Our French program graduates pursue diverse careers. Alumni have become UN policy advisors, editorial managers, fashion reporters, international development specialists, global real estate executives, and professionals in foreign service, museums, and nonprofit organizations. Many also continue their education through graduate programs in French studies, art history, or linguistics, while others enter medical or law school.
The Maison Française serves as a cultural hub, offering film screenings, academic talks, musical performances, and casual conversation events during the school year. Our department maintains an active Pi Delta Phi chapter, the prestigious French honors society, while the student-led NYU French Club promotes fellowship and Francophone cultural appreciation across campus.
