The Department of French Literature, Thought, and Culture invites students at all proficiency levels, from beginners to those with prior French studies in high school or college who wish to enhance their language abilities or explore Francophone literature, cultures, and intellectual traditions. Advanced courses cater to both native speakers and heritage language learners. Our curriculum highlights the richness of French-speaking communities worldwide while addressing contemporary issues like gender, racial equity, and sustainability, with programs that continually adapt. Students can pursue various majors and minors that pair well with disciplines such as art history, comparative literature, economics, history, international relations, journalism, music, and psychology. We highly recommend majors and minors to participate in study abroad opportunities at NYU Paris, situated in the vibrant Latin Quarter.
French graduates embark on diverse career trajectories. Alumni have become UN policy advisors, editorial managers, fashion reporters, global development consultants, international real estate executives, and professionals in foreign service, museums, and nonprofit organizations. Many also pursue advanced degrees in fields like French studies, art history, linguistics, medicine, or law.
The Maison Française serves as a cultural hub where students enjoy film screenings, lectures, musical performances, and Café et Conversation gatherings during the academic year. Our department sponsors a Pi Delta Phi chapter, the prestigious national French honor society. Additionally, the student-led NYU French Club promotes fellowship and cultivates enthusiasm for French language and Francophone cultures across campus.
