Students in the Broadcast Journalism Concentration develop essential journalism skills through a mix of theoretical learning and practical experience, combining classroom instruction, live demonstrations, hands-on production work, and project-based assignments. The program's initial phase establishes core digital journalism competencies, teaching students to investigate, create, film, compose, present, and assemble news content for television and online platforms. Participants complete multiple recorded news segments using both single and multi-camera setups, edited with Avid Media Composer. During the latter portion, students implement their skills in NYFA News, our biweekly news program, experiencing various production roles such as anchor, correspondent, content writer, show producer, and director while learning studio operations.
Assignments feature the VO (voice-over) exercise, where learners combine visuals and ambient audio to craft narratives, and the News Package, requiring students to propose story ideas, gather footage, conduct interviews, script, edit, and provide voice narration. Participants also master on-camera stand-up presentations and create visual enhancements like lower-third identifiers and location graphics. The Interview Profile task teaches effective subject selection, site choice, and questioning methods to extract newsworthy content. For the Long-form Story project, students produce in-depth reports exceeding six minutes, employing traditional narrative techniques to present multiple subjects in more sophisticated formats than standard news packages.
