In the Filmmaking Concentration, students receive hands-on training in film production while creating their own projects, completing more than 800 hours of practical instruction and real-world production work. The program covers all key aspects of filmmaking, such as cinematography, directing, screenwriting, producing, and editing, with students writing, shooting, directing, and editing eight digital short films (including a sync-sound thesis project).
Initial projects are filmed using DSLR cameras, while later work utilizes the RED Scarlet HD camera. All editing is done digitally with AVID software. Additionally, students learn to work with 16mm and 35mm film formats, with the option to shoot projects in either medium. Note that film production costs substantially more than HD digital video. Upon completion, students graduate with extensive production experience and a portfolio of eight original short films.
