The Documentary Filmmaking Concentration helps students develop expertise in visual non-fiction storytelling. Participants acquire hands-on training in essential documentary production skills such as producing, research, narrative development, interviewing, writing, cinematography, audio recording, and post-production. The curriculum covers digital videography fundamentals, audio capture techniques, and editing while providing an in-depth exploration of documentary history and styles, emphasizing cinematic language, technical approaches, visual aesthetics, narrative structure, and storytelling components. Students also refine their pitching abilities and learn to create ethical, marketable non-fiction television content.
Throughout the program, participants create multiple projects including: a 2-minute observational 16mm silent film, a 5-minute character-driven documentary, four personal video blogs for online distribution, and a 10-minute documentary addressing social issues. They also develop and present a documentary TV series concept, work collaboratively on a 5-10 minute promotional reel for a documentary series, and produce a culminating 30-minute thesis documentary showcased at NYFA's Documentary Film Festival.
