The MA in International Affairs program's concentrations allow students to combine theoretical knowledge, social research, and practical application to prepare for careers as scholars or professionals in global affairs. These specializations provide various avenues for hands-on research and connect to practical learning through International Field Programs and Practicum in International Affairs initiatives. They also facilitate guest speaker sessions, workshops, networking events, and student-led discussion groups on relevant topics.
To complete the concentration requirement, students take a foundational course plus three elective courses in their selected focus area. The Cities and Social Justice specialization examines how global influences intersect with local contexts, stakeholders, and systems to shape urban dynamics, challenges, and possibilities. Through interdisciplinary coursework, students develop analytical and practical competencies for engaging with urbanization in an interconnected world.
Participants can explore diverse urban themes such as development and infrastructure, poverty and inequality, governance structures, human rights, cultural dynamics, and environmental sustainability. The curriculum builds practical expertise in geographic information systems, architectural design, urban economics, impact assessment, and critical evaluation methods.
Instruction comes from faculty with expertise in economics, political science, anthropology, history, urban planning, and architecture. Students also benefit from extensive research and professional opportunities through New York City organizations and International Field Programs in global urban centers.
